“The Screw sound is when I mix tapes with songs that people can relax to. Slower tempos, to feel the music and so you can hear what the rapper is saying.”

– DJ Screw

It all started with one man and his desire to slow the world down. DJ Screw, born Robert Earl Davis, Jr. (July 20, 1971 – November 16, 2000) in Smithville, Texas, is one of hip-hop’s most influential DJs, and one of the most revered and innovative DJs known internationally for his pioneering style. While living in Houston in the late 1980s, he experimented with mixing different rap songs together and slowing down the tempo. DJ Screw released several successful albums throughout the 1990s, but he died in November 2000. His method of slowing or “screwing down” the tempo earned Davis the nickname “DJ Screw.”

The now world famous Screwed Up Records & Tapes retail store, opened in early 1998, is the first and only establishment that DJ Screw himself opened for business. DJ Screw’s tapes and CDs are available through Screwed Up Records & Tapes at 7717 Cullen Blvd., Houston TX 77051 or online at the official website: http://screweduprecords.com
